Did you know that gray whales are nicknamed “the devil fish”?
This nickname is a result of their aggressive nature when harpooned. Another fun fact is they are the only living members of the baleen whale family.
What sets them apart from other families of the baleen is their feeding habit – they are predominantly bottom feeders.
Want to learn more fun facts about the gray whale?
Join us in celebrating the return of the gray whales to Monterey Bay in the Whalefest Monterey Festival at and around the Old Fisherman’s Wharf and Custom House Plaza – Downtown Monterey State Historic Park.
This will be the 12th Annual Whalefest Monterey and is set to happen on March 19th and 20th, 2022.
The Annual Whalefest Monterey is a free, fun, and educational family interaction for people of all ages. The event celebrates the biodiversity of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
This year’s event will also feature a 2-day symposium with world-renowned marine experts gracing the occasion.
Lots of fun activities will be the theme of the event, from boat displays, musicians coming, as well as dozens of fascinating marine exhibit booths brought to you by different local and national marine organizations.
And of great importance, you’ll get to see these massive creatures on the open sea! If you decide to take a tour at the Old Fisherman’s Wharf.
On top of that, you’ll also get a good view of other sea creatures, including the super-friendly dolphins, orcas, and pelicans.
The bay offers the best sightings of dolphins, porpoises, pinnipeds, Fissipeds, and of course, whales.
